Continuous
Collecting and presenting city narratives
Collecting the City is a program line that encompasses projects we carry out in co-creation with partners in the city. We work together with groups and networks that have not yet felt represented, or have felt underrepresented, in our museum and in the collection. Together with them, we collect and present current or underrepresented urban stories.

Together with Amsterdam residents
In recent years, Collecting the City has opened a new exhibition twice a year at the Amsterdam Museum on the Amstel and continuously programs events in all districts of the city, always in collaboration with the city. The museum joins forces with residents of Amsterdam. After all, residents are experts on which themes are relevant in their neighborhoods and which stories deserve attention on a larger, museum scale.

A more inclusive museum
The exhibitions and programs developed by the Amsterdam Museum in collaboration with partners and residents as part of Collecting the City are based on the method of co-creation. This approach has received a lot of attention in recent years, especially among museums that strive to make their offerings more inclusive. In co-creation, partners and residents become co-owners of an exhibition or program by working together on an equal footing from start to finish. Would you like to read more about our working method?
