Football Hallelujah!

12 September 2014 - 4 January 2015

Football is Netherlands’ number one sport – not only to play but also to watch and endlessly discuss. Football is passion, football is war, football is god. Stadiums full to the brim: churches all but empty. The weekly match is today’s Sunday worship. Is this mere chance? Or is there more to it? Is football the new religion?

The ‘Football Hallelujah!’ exhibition appealed to people of all ages. You could take a football quiz to test your knowledge or take a free audio tour around the special images and iconic pieces, including Van Basten’s football boots and a pair of Maradona’s trousers.

Following the exhibition, along with Henk Schiffmacher, the museum went in search of the best football tattoo in Amsterdam. Umpteen football fans sent us photos of their boldest, biggest and most beautiful football tattoo for the change to win an actual trophy, undying fame and a tattoo by Schiffmacher & Veldhoen tattoo parlour to the value of €500.

The exhibition, hosted together with the Historisch Museum Basel, was on display in the Amsterdam Museum from 12 September and appeared in various European locations. ‘Football Hallelujah!’ comprised part of ‘De Gelovige Stad’ [The Faithful City] – an online platform on the theme of religion and religious experiences in Amsterdam. The platform was provided by a range of cultural and religious institutions to offer people the opportunity to get acquainted with diverse forms of religious experiences in the city in an accessible and original format.
