The culture of a city like Amsterdam is never static: it is shaped by people with many different backgrounds, networks and traditions that are always in flux. People who are visibly and invisibly connected, who try to belong, and who must relate to one another. Sense of place’ concerns people, their perception of a place and the ways they try to make that feel like home.
Sense of Place is the theme of Refresh Amsterdam, an initiative of the Amsterdam Museum that invites contemporary makers with an artistic practice to give a tangible and recognizable form to their perspectives on this theme through their work. The Amsterdam Museum organizes Refresh Amsterdam in collaboration with De Appel, CBK Zuidoost, Compagnietheater, OSCAM, Rijksakademie, SEXYLAND and The Black Archives.
The selected proposals will be presented from October 2020 to January 2021 in an exhibition at the Amsterdam Museum, as well as attention in special programming at the partnering organizations. Following the exhibition, several works will receive a permanent place in the collection of the Amsterdam Museum.
