Choose humanity

Choose humanity. Stop violence. Cease fire.

The Amsterdam Museum is deeply shocked by the unrelenting violence endured by countless innocent civilians in the Palestinian territories and Israel. We express our deepest condolences to their families and relatives. We also sincerely sympathize with the many Amsterdam residents who are affected by this tragedy. Due to the severe escalation of violence, an acute humanitarian crisis is happening now for Gaza and its people, almost half of whom are children. The Amsterdam Museum stands for compassion and justice and, in line with the appeal of the Amsterdam City Council, calls on the Dutch government to make every effort for a mutual ceasefire, the admission of emergency aid for Gaza, the release of all hostages, and the enforcement of international law and international law rulings.

We hope for a sustainable peace process whose foundation is universal human rights for both Israelis and Palestinians. Until then, as a city museum, we see that this human drama - which has gone on for over 75 years - also has an enormous impact on people in Amsterdam. It leads to sadness, anger, lack of understanding, feelings of insecurity and other intense emotions. That is why it is important to be merciful to each other in these times, especially in a city like ours.

As the Amsterdam Museum, we strive to provide a home where all of Amsterdam’s residents and visitors can come together to find connection in this difficult period. We offer space for reflection and contemplation, a place where we believe in the healing power of art, heritage, and stories. In doing so, we emphasize the stories of unheard and marginalized voices.

In the exhibition Refresh Amsterdam #2 - War and Conflict (October 7, 2023 - February 25, 2024), together with more than twenty partners in the city, we offer a platform for new work on the theme of war and conflict from the perspective of Amsterdam creators. The accompanying public program provides context through performances and lectures.
