About All About That Dress and LACRIMA
The talk All About That Dress ties in thematically with LACRIMA, the performance by Caroline Guiela Nguyen which can be seen at De Meervaart theatre during the Holland Festival. In the performance, we follow the hands behind the creation of an exclusive wedding dress for a British princess: seamstresses in Paris, lace-makers in Alençon and embroiderers in Mumbai.
During the talk, the speakers will explore how fashion is linked to power, labour, visibility and heritage. Drawing on theatre, fashion design and the museum context, they will discuss craftsmanship, intergenerational transmission and the hidden structures behind luxury and beauty.
Tess van Zalinge’s installation ‘Inside Out’ forms a physical extension of this theme. In a deconstructed installation of wedding dresses, seams, boning and constructions are laid bare, shifting the focus from the end result to the hands and stories behind the garment.
