Drs Marike Geurts (MA) is a PhD researcher in the Department of Medical Oncology at Amsterdam UMC. Academically trained as an art and cultural historian, she now investigates art‑based learning interventions in palliative care through the interdisciplinary RAAK-PRO project The Art of Creating New Stories: Working with Art Based Learning in Palliative Care, which has been researching the role of art education in palliative care since 2022. During her MA, she contributed to Studio I — a collaboration between Van Abbemuseum and Stedelijk Museum working on inclusion and diversity in the cultural sector. During the COVID‑19 pandemic she retrained as an elderly‑care nurse, gaining hands‑on palliative care experience that she now integrates into her research on art-viewing and meaning-making with and for people that live with an incurable form of cancer.
