About the exhibition
Welcome to the Northside is about Amsterdam-Noord, a part of the city that has been growing and transitioning for years. Recent investments and new facilities in the area seem to be intended primarily for its new, wealthier residents. The original inhabitants, an economically poor and close-knit community, are rising in defiance. Witnessing the soul of the neighborhood under pressure, they reveal their story in this exhibition.
Verdedig Noord (Defend the North) is working to convince municipalities and developers of the value of the existing culture there. In their view, this social and colorful soul is not something that should be suppressed. In fact, it should act as a powerful nucleus for new developments. This exhibition celebrates the beauty that Amsterdam-Noord has always possessed.
