Constance Wibaut enjoyed great fame for her artistic and graceful fashion drawings with which she achieved great fame. She herself was an elegant figure well into old age. For many years, Constance Wibaut was an internationally recognized fashion journalist, working for Elsevier, Elegance and several foreign magazines. Constance Wibaut also worked as a teacher and lecturer and had guest lectureships elsewhere. As she worked she also taught, always preparing everything well and with a keen eye for detail.

Constance Wibaut was delighted to be recognized as an artist when the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague acquired her entire drawn oeuvre in 1988. In her home in the Harmoniehof in Amsterdam, she worked in her studio until an advanced age - a privilege to visit there and see her sculptures with her background information. After her period as a very well-known fashion journalist, she concentrated on sculpting especially busts or “heads” of well-known personalities.

In 2000, the Amsterdam Museum, under the direction of curator Bert Vreeken, made a wonderful exhibition of her busts with Constance Wibaut in the Amsterdam Gallery. She modeled powerful and interesting “heads” such as of Ed van Thijn and Ellen Vogel. After the exhibition, the museum acquired the beautiful bust of Bernard Haitink which I told the conductor about at a later meeting.

Constance Wibaut was a gifted artist in the fields of fashion drawing and sculpture. She was delighted that the Amsterdam Museum and the Gemeentemuseum (now Kunstmuseum) included her attractive work in their collections.

About

Ode by Pauline Kruseman to Constance Wibaut.

This ode is based on the text spoken by Pauline Kruseman, former director of the Amsterdam Museum, for the exhibition 1001 Women at the Amsterdam Museum in 2018. The text was written based on memories of conversations with Constance Wibaut and Ileen Montijn's article on Constance Wibaut in the Huygens Institute' s Women's Lexicon (in Dutch).
