Ode to Elisabeth Samson | I think you are a hero

Although Samson belonged to the colonial elite, it remained questionable whether she was fully accepted as an independent black woman. Elisabeth Samson lived in The Hague between 1737 and 1739 and traveled through the Netherlands again in 1743 and 1744. Her agent was based in Amsterdam. In 1764, he submitted her request to marry a white man to the States General—she had not been granted permission in Suriname. Samson won her case: there was no law prohibiting marriage between black and white people.
